Everything you need to know about Simple Living Experiments, how they work, and how to get the most from the platform.
Every experiment on the platform is designed to last exactly 7 days. We chose this duration because it is long enough to build a meaningful habit loop and notice real changes, but short enough that commitment feels manageable. After 7 days, you can choose to continue the experiment as a permanent habit, try a variation, or move on to something new.
No. Every experiment is designed to require nothing beyond what you already have. Some experiments use a notebook and pen, some use a glass of water, and most require nothing at all. The whole philosophy of Simple Living Experiments is that meaningful change comes from how you use your time and attention, not from purchasing new things.
Absolutely. We love hearing ideas from our community. You can submit experiment suggestions through the contact form on our Contact page. We review every submission and consider it for inclusion in our library. The best experiments are specific, achievable in a week, require no special tools, and produce noticeable results. If your idea is selected, we will credit you on the experiment page.
Yes, the platform is completely free. All experiments, guides, weekly challenges, results, and reflections are available to everyone at no cost. We believe that simple living should be accessible to all, and we sustain the project through our community's goodwill and occasional partnerships with like-minded organisations. There are no premium tiers, paywalls, or hidden charges.
Our community features include the weekly experiment challenges where everyone participates in the same experiment simultaneously, the Results page where you can see aggregated data and insights from participants, and the Reflections page where members share personal stories and lessons learned. We also send a weekly newsletter with tips, highlights, and encouragement to help you stay on track.
We take privacy seriously. Any data you share through tracking or reflections is anonymised before it appears on the Results page. We do not sell your data to third parties, we do not use invasive tracking, and we store only what is necessary to provide the service. You can read our full Privacy Policy for complete details on how we handle your information.
We recommend starting with one experiment at a time, especially if you are new to the platform. Stacking too many changes at once makes it difficult to identify which experiment is producing which effect, and increases the chance of feeling overwhelmed. Once you have completed a few experiments and have established habits, you can certainly run complementary experiments together -- for example, Morning Silence pairs well with Water First Thing since both happen in the first few minutes of your day.
Where possible, yes. Many of our experiments are informed by research in behavioural science, psychology, and habit formation. We draw on the work of researchers like BJ Fogg (Tiny Habits), James Clear (Atomic Habits), and peer-reviewed studies on topics like gratitude journaling, cold exposure, and digital detox. However, we are a lifestyle platform, not a clinical programme. Each experiment page includes context about the evidence behind the practice, but we always encourage participants to listen to their own bodies and consult professionals when appropriate.
Struggling is completely normal and nothing to be ashamed of. Every experiment includes a Tips section with common challenges and how to overcome them. If you need more help, you can reach out to us directly via the Contact page, and our team will respond within 48 hours. You can also read through the Reflections page, where other participants share their honest experiences, including the difficult moments. Often, knowing that others faced the same struggles makes it easier to push through.
We encourage it. Sharing your experience helps others feel confident about starting their own experiments, and it strengthens the community. You can submit a reflection through the Reflections page, share your tracking data on the Results page, or simply tell friends and family about what you have learned. If you share on social media, we would love for you to use the hashtag #SimpleLivingExperiments so we can celebrate your progress together.
Missing a day does not mean you have failed. Life happens. The most important thing is to continue the next day without guilt or the urge to restart from scratch. Research on habit formation shows that a single missed day has almost no impact on long-term habit building, but quitting after a missed day has a significant impact. Simply pick up where you left off and keep going.
We are happy to help. Reach out and we will get back to you within 48 hours.
