About This Experiment
We live in a culture that celebrates multitasking, but neuroscience tells a different story. The human brain does not truly multitask -- it rapidly switches between tasks, and each switch carries a cognitive cost. Studies from Stanford and the American Psychological Association show that habitual multitaskers perform worse on every measure of productivity, memory, and focus.
This seven-day experiment asks you to do one thing at a time, fully, before moving on. Eat without scrolling. Write without checking messages. Listen to someone without composing your reply. The simplicity of the rule belies its difficulty -- and its power.
How To Do It
- Choose your start day and commit to a full seven days. Write a simple intention statement: "This week, I do one thing at a time."
- Each morning, write your top three tasks for the day on a physical notepad. These are your single-focus items.
- When you begin a task, remove all distractions. Close unnecessary browser tabs, silence your phone, and let colleagues know you are in focus mode.
- Work on one task until it is complete or until you reach a natural stopping point. Only then move to the next task.
- Apply the same rule to non-work activities. When eating, just eat. When talking, just listen and talk. When walking, just walk.
- At the end of each day, log your results. Count tasks completed, rate your stress (1-10), and rate your focus quality (1-10).

Tips For Success
Use a physical notepad
Writing your tasks by hand makes the commitment more tangible. Cross each one off when completed for a satisfying sense of progress.
Batch similar tasks
Group emails, calls, and admin tasks into dedicated blocks. This way you stay in one mode of thinking rather than jumping between many.
Catch yourself gently
You will slip. When you notice yourself multitasking, simply pause and return to one thing. No guilt required -- awareness is the practice.
Tell one person
Share the experiment with a colleague or friend. Having someone who knows what you are doing creates gentle accountability.
